Un propos de Marin Karmitz
Considered to be a “story teller” Juan Muñoz has built up a powerful and atypical work in light of the different trends of international sculpture in the 80’s and 90’s. His devices, somewhere between installation and sculpture, are peopled with surprising characters whose postures or expressions are out of limits with our logic of perception. Muñoz questions the anthropocentrism around our relationship to space. One Laughing at the Red Ball is a particularly enigmatic work. The character representing it is moulded out of a uniform gray material, holding a red ball, a subtle insertion of a coloured object sending us back to the circus. But his stiff smile betrays a certain feeling of malaise reminding us of the unpleasantness of the human condition.
